Man-made underground passage in Killeen

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under Killeen in County Louth, a man-made passage descends into darkness, defying the casual label of a natural cave. People may have dug through solid earth to hide goods, escape storms or simply test whether stone could be bent to human will. The absence of doors or markers suggests the entrance was once obvious, perhaps blocked later by soil or forgotten by the village that made it.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Local tradition of a 'cave'.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
