Man-made underground passage in Kilcrohane

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Mules and men struggled through narrow rock, bleeding and breathing dust until they broke into open air. They had cut a passage through solid mountain rather than climb around it. The route still works because stubborn people refused to accept the shape of the land.
In Kilcrohane Graveyard (CO138-015001-). According to local information, a Man-made underground passage was discovered in the course of digging a grave in the area to the SW of the ruins of Kilcrohane Church (CO138-015002-) some years ago. It was filled in and there is no visible trace of it at ground level. There are currently graves and headstones in this area. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
