What is recorded here

Within the centre of a bawn (TS061-100003-) and c. 10m from a tower house (TS061-100002-), in lush, ungrazed pasture. There is no visible trace at ground level, it was probably backfilled for safety. It is not known of locally. In 1935 an underground passage was uncovered which, when partially opened, revealed ‘a hole about 12 ft [3.6m] by 6 ft [1.8m], and about 6ft deep…The roof is arched like a bridge, and the width between the side walls is 4 or 5 ft [1.2-1.5m]; the mortar is very hard, and obviously old’ (NMI topographical files 22/04/1935). Another letter states the arch was ‘4 feet [1.2m] down made of long stones and mortar’ (NMI topographical files).
