Kilconnell Church (in ruins)

The remains of a levelled sub-rectangular area (dims. 12m E-W; 9m N-S) are defined by a low bank (overall Wth 5.1m; Wth at top 1.75m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.5m) best defined to E, W and the E end of the N side. A levelled scarp (Wth 5m; 0.1m) defines the S side and similarly the W end of the N side. There is sod-covered stone in the scarp at E. The interior is uneven and very gently depressed (Wth 4m; D 0.15m) within the centre. The church is depicted on the 1840 OS 6-inch map as a rectangular area (dims. c. 15m E-W; c. 8m N-S) and named 'Kilconnell Church (in ruins)'. O'Donovan (1840 vol. 1, 213) describes the remains of a church (dims. 40' x 18') defined by an upstanding fragment of the S wall (dims. L 9'; H 8') attached to the SW corner. According to White (1892, 15) this was the 'Protestant Parish Church after the Reformation'. The graveyard (TS061-100006-) is c. 18m to N. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
