What is recorded here
No one knows whether the passage stored grain, hid people or led somewhere forgotten. The earth swallowed its shape and kept the secret. Gortearagh still stands above the hidden work, unchanged and certain.
In ringfort (CO022-086---). Bowman (1934, 494) recorded 'site of Man-made underground passage on N. of rampart'. No visible surface trace.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
