Man-made underground passage in Garryletter

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Garryletter is a hidden chamber beneath a Kerry rath, reached through a narrow lintelled hole and a collapsed southern entrance. The passage stretches southeast to northwest under the mound, perhaps built for storage, ritual or escape when storms stripped the land of shelter. Its small size excludes casual visitors, suggesting the builders valued secrecy more than grandeur.
In a rath (KE102-070----). A small, inaccessible lintelled opening (D 1.5m) is situated near the centre of the rath. A second, partially collapsed opening is visible on the scarp at SE, beside the entrance to the rath and indicates that the Man-made underground passage extends in a SE-NW direction. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
