What is recorded here

Dungooly is a man-made underground passage in a ringfort, the kind of hidden room people built when they wanted to disappear from sight. It may have been a cellar, a refuge or a trap, and that uncertainty is what makes it alive. To imagine someone crawling through darkness there is not fantasy, but a reply to the shape of the hole.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
