Man-made underground passage in Duarrigle (duhallow By., Clonfert Par.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Duarrigle is a hidden chamber in a ringfort, lost to time and memory. It may have been a shelter, a treasury, or a chamber for rituals, but no stone or entrance remains to prove it. The earth closed over the passage, and the people who built it forgot the way in. What is left is a hole in the story, not a hole in the ground.
In ringfort (CO023-001---). Bowman (1934, 183) noted a 'Man-made underground passage was said to have been here, - there is no sign of it now'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
