Man-made underground passage in Coolbane (carbery W. (w.d.) By.)

Discovered November 1985. Four earth-cut chambers connected by creepways. Chamber 1: L 2.5m; Wth 1.3m; H c. 0.8m. Chamber 2: L 2m; Wth 1.6m; H 0.95m. Chamber 3: L 3.2m; Wth 1.6m; H 0.8m. Chamber 4: L 2.8m; Wth 1.3m; H 0.8m (max.). Annexe off Chamber 2. Construction shafts in all chambers. Cleary suggests original entrance in N wall of Chamber 4. Traces of dark lenses of peaty consistency noted in disturbed soil above Man-made underground passage suggest habitation. Spindle whorl found in disturbed soil. (pers. comm. R. M. Cleary).
