Man-made underground passage in Coolagh (longford By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No one knows the exact length, depth or purpose of the hidden passage beside the Coolagh rath. It may have been a drainage channel, a refuge or a ceremonial route, but the earth has taken back its shape. The rath still stands above ground while the tunnel vanished beneath it, leaving behind a gap that invites imagination rather than proof.
According to local information (personal communication Dr J. Shiels, March 1981), there is a possible Man-made underground passage to the SW of the rath (GA107-044----). No visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 29 November 2017

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
