Man-made underground passage in Conva

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under the southern bank of a Conva ringfort, a hidden chamber waited for a harvester to break the ground in 1986. Stone walls rise less than a metre before leaning inward to form a corbelled roof, while a low lintelled opening points northwest into a blocked creepway. The chamber is small enough to touch on all sides, yet large enough for one person to stand inside the dark.
In ringfort (CO034-03301-), under levelled bank to SSE. Discovered in 1986 during harvesting. Collapse revealed roughly circular chamber (2.7m N-S; 2.7m E-W); walls roughly coursed with stone to a height of 0.76m; roof corbelled. Opening (Wth 0.63m; H 0.38m), with stone jambs and lintel, to creepway at NW side. Creepway filled with earthen debris and inaccessible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
