Man-made underground passage in Cloonygorman

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Closed to everyone now, the passage drops through a lintelled opening into a chamber cut from living earth. It lies in the north quadrant of the Cloonygorman ringfort, where collapsed ground has swallowed part of the chamber and blocked the way down. Whatever hands dug it and whatever purpose it served, the earth has taken the passage back.
In N quadrant of ringfort (CO106-04801-). Collapsed area noted with lintelled entrance leading down into earth-cut chamber which has subsided. Inaccessible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
