Man-made underground passage in Clonmoyle West — Report the wrong picture

Hartnett found a closed cave eight yards south of the ringfort entrance in Clonmoyle West. The main rampart still covers the passage, denying it to casual viewers. The builders likely dug through solid ground to create a hidden route within their own defences.

In ringfort (8176). Hartnett (1939, 48) recorded a 'cave' 'about 8 yards south of the NE entrance inside the main rampart'; it was 'closed up' and 'barely noticeable'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
