What is recorded here

Cloneary rath hides a man-made underground passage beside its central chamber, where a buried slab once marked the entrance. People may have crawled through darkness beneath the mound, carrying firelight into depths no longer visible. The earth has swallowed the opening, but the shape of the hole remains in memory, waiting for someone to dig beside the rath and discover what the hands of earlier people built beneath the grass.

Situated c. 3m E of the centre of the internal area of Cloneary rath (CV013-009001-). An earlier report (OPW 1969) recorded a partially buried slab (L 0.9m; dims. 0.67m x 0.29m) which was interpreted as a possible Man-made underground passage lintel. Not indentified in the course of the last site visit. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995).
