Man-made underground passage in Claraghatlea North

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Claraghatlea North holds a hidden stone passage inside a levelled ringfort, waiting beneath ordinary soil. A mower and later a horse fell into the hole before people filled it, suggesting the ground still hides its own shape. The nearby second ringfort watches the first like a duplicate shadow, while the vanished entrance refuses to show itself.
In levelled ringfort (CO039-04101-). Broker (1937, 45) noted that 'a mower and later a horse fell down into hole now filled up'. According to local information, stone-lined passage explored in the past. No visible surface trace. Second levelled ringfort (CO039-04102-) immediately to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
