What is recorded here

Underground chambers and narrow passages appeared when men dug for gravel at Chanonrock in the 1940s. The rock gave up a hidden room, perhaps a shelter or a chamber built by human hands long before the machines came. The diggers took what they wanted and left the chamber broken. What was hidden in the hill is no longer whole, but for a moment it was known.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Isolated Man-made underground passage located on summit of low hillock in undulating countryside. Discovered during gravel-digging in 1940s, and subsequently destroyed. (NMI file).
