Man-made underground passage in Castlefarm (nethercross By., Kilsallaghan Ed)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Kilsallaghan castle shadowed a hidden passage, likely a souterrain, though no marker exists to prove the claim. The absence of evidence does not diminish the possibility that people dug through living rock to build a chamber for storage, prayer or escape. A missing chamber is not nothing. It is a request to imagine the hands that cut it and the doors they closed behind them.
There is a local tradition of a subterranean feature in the environs of Kilsallaghan castle (Clinton, M.2005, 34). This may be the remains of a souterrrain. Not precisely located. Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Date of upload: 26 August 2011
