Baunballinlough holds a narrow drystone tunnel beneath a Kilkenny pasture, buried by time and perhaps by ploughs. A man may have dug it to hide goods, escape rain or keep a secret from neighbours. The ground still dips where the passage ran, and one flat stone waits exposed like a forgotten roof. What happened below remains unknown, but the shape of the hole suggests human hands and purpose.

Situated on a W-facing slope just off the brow of a N-S ridge in pasture. A Man-made underground passage, discovered during ploughing in 1983 (NMI file 1A/143/83), largely infilled. On inpsection in 1987 a short section of the passage was evident (Wth 0.45m). It was drystone-built and extended E-W. The Man-made underground passage is still evident as a dip in the field with one large flat stone (c. 0.4 x 0.5m) exposed which may have formed part of the roof. A ringfort (KK008-044----) lies c. 200m to the SE. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 7 February 2012
