Man-made underground passage in Ballymascanlan

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Discovered during roadworks in 1973. Access was gained through a collapsed lintel in the middle of a passage. The Man-made underground passage in its present state consists of a section of drystone-built passage (L c. 7m, Wth c. 1.2m, H c. 1.5m) blocked by collapse at both ends. (CLAJ 1973, 85). Evidence for a probable associated enclosure (LH004-127001-) was subsequently uncovered in 1996.
