Man-made underground passage in Ballymakellett

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Ballymakellett is a man-made underground passage hidden in County Louth, Ireland. Local tradition still calls it a cave, though human hands shaped every stone and shadow inside. It may have served as a shelter, a boundary marker, or a forgotten chamber within a ringfort. The passage remains a quiet reminder that the land holds more than it first reveals.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Local tradition of 'cave' in ringfort (LH004-092001-). (OS Memorandum 6474, A, B)

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
