Man-made underground passage in Ballybaun (lackalea Ed)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Beneath the southern bank of a Galway rath, a drystone passage stretches more than seven metres into darkness. Its northern chamber survives intact, measuring 2.8 metres long and 1.8 metres wide, while the southern end has collapsed into a stone-filled depression. People may have built this hidden tunnel to store valuables, escape danger, or simply bend the ordinary world into a secret shape.
Situated beneath the S sector of the enclosing bank of a rath (GA097-007----). This drystone-built Man-made underground passage (L >7.3m) runs N-S and extends away to the S from the external face of the bank. Only the N end of the chamber (L 2.8m; Wth 1.8m) survives intact. The S end (L 4.5m) has collapsed and its line is indicated by a stone-filled depression. There is another possible Man-made underground passage (GA097-007003) in the N sector of the interior.
