Ankail graveyard hides a tunnelled passage beside an 1890 tomb, narrow enough to see but not enter. The local story says the whole place is full of subterranean channels, as if the dead had dug their own roads beneath the grass. What those channels carried, whether water, breath, bodies or secret messages, has not survived into certainty.

Man-made underground passage (KE100-015005-): The IFC Schools' Collection records that the graveyard 'is full of subterranean channels'. At N, beside a tomb dated 1890, is a small opening, .4m x .4m, to an inaccessible Man-made underground passage. The opening provides a view of an apparently earth-tunnelled passage which extends to W. The entrance to a creepway is visible in the S wall of the passage. The above description is derived from A.
