Máirtín Ó Cadhain

Birthplace

What is recorded here

Máirtín Ó Cadhain was born in An Spidéal, County Galway, on 4 January 1906, the soil that later produced one of Ireland’s most radical modernist writers. He taught school, joined the Irish Republican Army, and was interned at Curragh Camp with Brendan Behan before turning his lived frustration into prose that broke Irish literary habit. Cré na Cille and his other work carried republicanism, Marxism, and anti-clerical edge into the language itself, making the written word a tool for re-conquest rather than decoration.
