Magnus Barefoot

Magnus Barefoot lost his life on 24 August 1103 near the River Quoile in County Down, ending a reign that stretched Norwegian rule across the Irish Sea. The young king had conquered Dublin and allied with Irish leaders, yet he fell into an Ulaid ambush while obtaining food supplies for the return journey home. His sudden death stripped Norway of its western empire and left three sons to inherit a throne weakened by the loss of its most ambitious ruler.
