Kisimul Castle, including the notable feature known as the "Long Drop," was built by the MacNeils of Barra, a powerful clan in the Hebrides, around the 13th century. The castle is important as a historic stronghold of the Clan MacNeil and as one of the few remaining medieval stone castles in the Western Isles of Scotland.
