The chapel and mortuary at Kisimul were built by the MacNeil chieftains of the Isle of Barra, likely in the 17th or 18th century. Dedicated to St Columba, the structure reflects a blend of domestic and ecclesiastical use, and it is significant as a rare example of a fortified chapel in the Western Isles.
