Lissanargid

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Lissanargid is a levelled fairy fort near the top of a Cork hill, its forty-four-metre circle reduced to a low rise and field boundary. A hidden underground passage may still cut through the interior, waiting for someone brave enough to find the entrance. The fairies did not leave so much as they waited for people to stop seeing the shape.
In pasture, near top of hill. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure on 1842, 1904 and 1938 OS 6-inch maps; external fosse hachured on 1938 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; circular area (diam. c. 44m) defined by earthen bank (int. H 1m; ext. H 1.1m) surviving in field boundary system NNE->ENE; as low rise to E and from W->NNE. Bowman (1934, 554) recorded site as levelled. Possible Man-made underground passage (CO041-180---) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
