Lismore

On high ground with excellent views of the Cousane Gap to W, Shehy Mountains to N and Bandon River valley to SE. Oval raised area (37m N-S; 31m E-W) enclosed by scarp (H 1.3m) E->WSW; earthen bank (H 0.3m) WSW->E; second earthen bank WNW->NE (H 0.9m) separated from inner bank by intervening fosse. Lismore, Glanycarney is an early-medieval ringfort, likely dating to between the 5th and 10th centuries, characterized by an oval enclosure with a scarp and earthen bank. Local folklore, common to many such sites in Ireland, associates it with the fairies, and it may have been known as a "fairy fort," believed to be a dwelling place of supernatural beings.
