Lisalleen Castle stood as a compact stronghold for William O'Meagher in 1641, guarded by trustees Lord Ikerrin and John Purcell within the gentle folds of North Tipperary. Its thick walls once rose eighteen feet above the grass, enclosing a small life of hearth-light and shadow before time stripped it back to a single surviving section of south wall. The ruin still holds the shape of that vanished room, waiting for imagination to refill the dark space where people lived and loved.

Situated on a low rise of ground in gently undulating countryside with a nearby possible tower house (TN030-022----) to the W. This castle was held in 1641 by Lord Ikerrin and John Purcell as trustees for William O'Meagher (O'Meagher 1890, 122; Stout 1984, 134). Described in the OS Letters as an 'old castle measuring 30ft 6in [9.2m] N-S by 24ft 6in [7.4m] E-W with walls 4ft 6in [1.3m] thick, standing no more than 18ft [5.4m] in height' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 85). Only a portion of the S wall (L 2m; H 3m; wall T 0.85m) of the castle survives with grass-covered wall-footings elsewhere. Lisalleen Castle was held in 1641 by Lord Ikerrin and John Purcell as trustees for William O'Meagh. It is remembered for its association with the O'Meagh family and the complex landholding arrangements of the period.
