Drummin Castle stood as a tower house on a low Tipperary rise, held in trust by Lord Ikerrin and John Purcell for the proprietor of Ballyknockan in 1641. Time has stripped it to grass-covered footings, erasing the barrel vault and slit openings once visible in its south wall. The empty ground still outlines a narrow rectangle, inviting imagination to populate the vanished rooms with heat, shadow and human noise.
Situated on a low rise of ground in an undulating upland area with a nearby castle site (TN030-024----) to the E. This castle was held in trust for the proprietor of Ballyknockan by Lord Ikerrin and John Purcell in 1641 (O'Meagher 1890, 122; Stout 1984, 134). Only the grass-covered wall-footings of the site survive to indicate the site of a castle marked on the latest ed. OS 6-inch map. Described in the OS Letters as a stump of castle measuring 44ft 6in (c. 13.6m) E-W by 23ft (7m) N-S which survived to first-floor level with evidence of a barrel vault over this floor (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 85). There were two slit opes visible in the S wall with no evidence of any cut stone used in its construction.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
