Lisachaun is a circular fairy fort in County Cork, Ireland, holding a hidden underground passage beneath its centre. People walked past two gaps in the bank or dropped field stones onto the rim, shaping the ring through ordinary labour rather than royal command. The Hinge Chamber and nearby chamber still invite curiosity about who dug the passage and what they kept from daylight.
In pasture, on level ground, above N-facing slope. Circular area (25.2m N-S; 26m E-W) enclosed by bank (H 0.9m). Field clearance stones dumped on bank; gap to SE (Wth 3.8m) and NNW (Wth 5.3m). Interior raised on N side to compensate for hillslope; low mound of dumped material and Man-made underground passage (CO141-097002-) in centre.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
