Linkardstown burial in Lisduggan North — Report the wrong picture

Quarry men broke the cliff in May 1946 and found two adults buried with sherds of a Drimnagh Style bowl. The bones date to 4585 plus or minus 80 years before present, marking an orthodox Linkardstown burial on the north Cork coast. They had rested beneath the sea cliff long before guns, roads or memory reached that spot.

Found during preparation of cliff face for quarry blasting in May 1946. Skeletal remains of two adults were recovered with three sherds of a Drimnagh Style bowl; a fourth undecorated sherd may have come from a second pot (pers. comm. M. Cahill). Although details of the burial are poorly documented, Brindley and Lanting (1989-90, 3) suggest that this may be an 'orthodox burial of Linkardstown Type.' Radiocarbon determination of 4585±80BP (OxA-2681) obtained for skeletal remains (ibid., 2). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. A Neolithic passage tomb; dates to the 4th millennium BCE. Its significance lies in the association with Drimnagh Style pottery, an important indicator of Neolithic settlement and funerary practices in the region.
