Lazars bled and starved in Spital fields while decent people looked away. The chapel and hospital vanished into tillage, leaving only a name to mark the cruelty. Forgetting is not mercy; it is a knife turned up the wrist.

In level tillage, no visible surface trace. According to Lewis (1837, Vol. 1, 383) 'founded in 1326, there are no vestiges except the lands of the latter, which are still called the Spital fields'; according to Lee (1966,18) 'this hospital was a lazar house'; Caulfield (1882, 1) locates the hospital 'where the Chapel of S.
