According to Smith (vol. 1, 1750, 125) Castlemartyr was 'anciently called Lepers-town' after 'a leper house' in adjoining Ballyouteragh. Lee (1966, 17) notes that 'martyr' in Baile na Martra, the Irish for Castlemartyr, means, among other things, a leper. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994).
