Kyleballymartin Fort is a moated site in County Limerick, Ireland, where a rectangular earthen bank still marks the edge of a forgotten boundary. The west side is cut by a public road, but the remaining bank and shallow ditch preserve the shape of a place that may have held burials or simply managed the slope of the land. Its rounded corners and level interior suggest careful human work, even though no grave or building now shows above the pasture.

In level pasture, though land immediately to N of site slopes down in that direction. Roughly rectangular area (50m E-W; 57m N-S) truncated on W side by public road (on NW-SE axis) but otherwise enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.5m) NW-SW, with external fosse (D 0.15m; Base Wth 2m) NE->SW. Bank on N side incorporated into field boundary; stone-facing on outside (N) similar to that on rest of field boundary. Deep depression at NW corner probably due to recent quarrying. NE and SE corners of enclosure are rounded. Interior level and raised noticeably on N side to compensate for fall in ground level. According to OS Name Books (OSNB no 87, 74) 'there was formerly a burial ground' here, but no surface trace of any burials now evident. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
