Explorer Tom Loanhead Stone Circle near Daviot looks at first like a ring of old neighbours who have agreed to meet on a hill and refuse to explain why. Walk closer and the recumbent slab on the southwest side changes the conversation: this was a place shaped for ceremony and remembrance across many generations. Historic Environment Scotland describes a circle of eleven stones, about twenty-one metres across, surrounding a ring cairn. The large slab laid on its side is flanked by two upright stones, the distinctive arrangement found in north-east Scotland's recumbent circles. The monument likely began in the late Neolithic period and continued to matter through the Bronze Age. Nobody can assign a neat purpose to every stone. The archaeology beats my prehistoric committee theory. Beside the circle lie remains of an enclosed cremation cemetery. Excavations found the cremated remains of more than thirty people there, some in simple graves and others in ceramic urns. That detail asks for a quieter voice than the stones' theatrical silhouettes. Archaeologists have also considered whether the great slab and its pillars framed the southern moon, though interpretation remains open. Stand inside the ring and see how the hill, the sky and the stone edges meet without pretending we know every thought of the people who came here. The monument is free and open year-round, near Daviot off the A920, about five miles northwest of Inverurie. Historic Environment Scotland recommends strong footwear. Leave the stones untouched and take your time between the circle and the cemetery; Loanhead has more than one chapter, and the smallest traces may keep you looking longest.
