Knockanstanly

Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 20m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and as a fragment of a bank (C c. 30m) E-S-W on the 1927. ed. Situated at the S end of a low N-S ridge on the summit of Rathcroghan plateau. Described as a rectangular enclosure of c. 1 ha. (c. 2.5 acres) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 2m) with an inner ditch or fosse (Wth c. 1.8m; D c. 0.75m) and an outer fosse (Wth c. 3.5m; D c. 0.8m) at N that had an entrance through it. At S there was a double bank (Knox 1914a, 16). This is probably a description of fields which are still extant, but the mapped feature is not now visible at ground level in pasture.
