King's Cottage

Detached three-bay single-storey thatched house, built c.1780. Pitched thatched roof with rendered gable and off centre chimneystacks. Lime washed rubble stone walls. Six-over-six timber sliding sash windows with exposed sash boxes and stone sills. Replacement timber sheeted door.

This is an interesting example of a vernacular thatched house. Utilising traditional local materials, thatched buildings were once commonly found all over Ireland but are now becoming increasingly rare. The small irregularly-spaced windows, timber sliding sash windows and lime washed rubble stone walls are all typical of its age and its vernacular origin. It is an interesting contributor to the architectural heritage in this area, and is one of a small number of surviving thatched houses in the county.
