Kiln

At the far W of the site, is a further area measuring approx. 10m x 15m within LMA. This area uses the 'modern' field boundary to the E and a further 'L' shaped ditch to the W. Inside this area is a 'bow-tie shaped' lime kiln 6m long consisting of a central circular chamber and two lateral rake-out boxes. The whole is stone lined and the floor of the fireboxes is made of a type of lime mortar. The central chamber had a couple of parallel, carbonised sticks on the base. The rake-out boxes may have multiple floors. The central chamber is only c.0.50m across and is likely to have been the base of a funnel-shaped vertical flue with the chamber above in which lime was burnt. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien.
