Kilkenny Earthen Mound

A flat-topped steep-sided mound 1.33m in height. It is oval-shaped 11.5m at base SW-NE and 8m at top and 16.2m at base NW-SE and 11.7m at top. Mainly composed of earth but with some stone protruding through the top. In the same field slightly to the SE is another similar feature 1.71m in height, 16.1m at base NE-SW and 9.4m at top and 18.1m at base NW-SE and 11.6m at top. A large slab 3.6m × 0.55m to 1.17m is located on the E side of the mound. The two mounds are located in fair pasture on the SE end of Ranny Point a small peninsula on the S side of the Gweebarra Estuary. A Neolithic passage tomb; its construction dates to the early to middle Neolithic period (c. 3700–3000 BCE). The structure represents a significant example of early communal burial and ritual practices in Ireland.
