Kilfane House

Detached single- or three-bay single-storey gate lodge, extant 1839, on a rectangular plan; two-bay single-storey side elevations. Now disused. Hipped slate roof with concrete ridge tiles, red brick Running bond chimney stack (east) having stepped capping supporting terracotta pot, and replacement rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on slightly overhanging eaves. Rendered walls. Square-headed door opening (west) with timber surround framing glazed timber boarded door having cast-iron lattice glazing bars. Square-headed window openings (east) with timber surrounds framing casement windows having cast-iron lattice glazing bars. Square-headed window openings (remainder) with timber surrounds framing casement windows having cast-iron lattice glazing bars. Set at entrance to grounds of Kilfane House.

A gate lodge erected by Gervase Parker Bushe (1779-1827) to designs attributed to William Robertson (1770-1850) of Kilkenny illustrating the continued development or "improvement" of the Kilfane House estate in the early nineteenth century with the architectural value of the composition, one recalling the 'Cottage for a single Labourer [adaptable] to a gate-keeper on a private road' illustrated in Plate I of "Designs for Cottages, Cottage Farms, and other Rural Buildings; including Entrance Gates and Lodges" (1805) by Joseph Gandy (1771-1843), confirmed by such attributes as the compact rectilinear plan form; the arcaded 'Porch [intended for a] Seat under the Window'; the pretty lattice glazing patterns; and the slightly oversailing roof. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, thus upholding the character or integrity of a gate lodge forming part of a self-contained group alongside an adjacent gateway (see 12402844) with the resulting ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a rural street scene.
