Kildoney Glebe Children's Burial Ground

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Kildoney Glebe Children's Burial Ground in County Donegal holds low banks, ridges, hollows and a small mound fitted with upright stones beside a well. The name suggests children were laid to rest here, while the shape of the site preserves the effort taken to mark them. A mother may have walked this ground more than once, learning its hollows by heart and trusting the stones to hold what flesh forgets.
This site is known as a 'children's burial ground'. It consists of a complex of low banks, some ridges and hollows and a small mound on which are standing several small upright stones. There is a well, slightly to the N of this complex. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
