What is recorded here
The parish church of Kilcooley, listed as Kiliculy in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin in 1306 (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 223), and situated on a broad low hill. The S wall of the church is incorporated into the S. wall of the rectangular graveyard (RO028-046002-) (dims 42m E-W; 28m N-S) and the graveyard has been extended to the W (dims c. 80m E-W; 28m N-S). Within the old graveyard the outline of the church (int. dims 26m E-W; 6.3m N-S) can be seen in the spread of the W, N and E walls (Wth 2.5-4m; H 0.1-0.3m). The rounded head of a window (RO028-046005-) (dims 0.22m x 0.2m; T 0.3m) and a grave-marker with a chamfer and rebate for a doorway (H 0.4m) suggest work of the 12th century and the later middle ages. N of the old graveyard is field system (RO028-046003-). Archaeological testing (09E0228) c. 100m W of the old graveyard and church on the other side of the entry lane produced no related material (Purcell 2012).
