Kilcaragh Church (in ruins)

Situated on a knoll of rock outcrop on top of a hill. The possible parish church of Kilcaragh which was regarded as part of Ballygunner parish by the early 17th century (Anon. 1902, 112). It is depicted as a rectangular structure (dims. c. 20m E-W; c. 8m N-S) on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It was dedicated to St Cathrach or St Carthage (Power 1890-1, 478), but apparently had no graveyard according to J. O'Donovan writing c. 1840 (O'Flanagan 1929, 11). It is not visible at ground level and although there is no record of the church or enclosure, it is reputed locally to have been a large site (Power 1890-91, 478). Anon.
