Kevin Barry was born at 8 Fleet Street, Dublin, on 20 January 1902, the fourth of seven children in a family sustained by his father's dairy business. He left that house to become a medical student and IRA volunteer, but the streets where he first learned the weight of a boy's name remained the measure of his life. Seven years later he was hanged at eighteen, turning a ordinary Dublin birth into a wound that bled across the island.
