Katherine Jones, Viscountess Ranelagh, was born in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland on 22 March 1615. She became a scientist, political and religious philosopher, and host of a London salon frequented by virtuosi. Her thinking shaped circles including the Hartlib Circle and the Invisible College, and she corresponded with Samuel Hartlib, Edward Hyde, William Laud, Thomas Hyde, and John Milton.
