Ardagh in County Donegal birthed John Toland, the radical mind who called pompous religion tyrannical before his sixteenth year. He carried that youthful defiance through Glasgow, Edinburgh and London, forcing powerful men to answer questions they preferred to bury. Toland died poor in Putney without a gravestone, yet his unrecorded life still echoes in every person who refuses to follow merely because others do.
