John Pope Hennessy was born in 1834 in County Cork, Ireland, the son of a hide merchant and one of eight children. He later became the eighth Governor of Hong Kong and the fifteenth Governor of Mauritius, serving under Queen Victoria. He returned to County Cork, where he died at Rostellan Castle in 1891.
