John Pentland Mahaffy died in Dublin, Ireland on 30 April 1919. He lived a full life spanning Switzerland, Germany and Ireland, teaching classics at Trinity College Dublin and guiding brilliant students such as Oscar Wilde. His sharp wit and deep scholarship shaped Dublin intellectual life until his death at eighty.
