John Edmund Fitzmaurice emerged from Moyvane, County Kerry, in 1839 to become the fourth bishop of Erie, Pennsylvania. He crossed the ocean at nineteen, abandoned law for priesthood, and climbed from curate to rector before leading a diocese until his death in 1920. The boy who left Kerry became the man who shaped Erie, carrying Irish discipline into American cathedral life.
